Florida Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk will be sidelined until December while recovering from offseason surgery, general manager Bill Zito announced Wednesday.
Tkachuk underwent surgery in August to repair a torn adductor muscle and sports hernia injuries he sustained while playing for the United States at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February. The 27-year-old forward initially played through both injuries during Florida’s second consecutive Stanley Cup championship run before having the procedure.
“We anticipate him being out until December-ish, but don’t hold me to that,” Zito said Wednesday at Baptist Health IcePlex. “That’s my internet medical degree.” The timeline remains fluid as Tkachuk must hit various benchmarks in his recovery before the Panthers can further evaluate his progress.
Earlier reports suggested Tkachuk could miss time into 2026, but Zito’s latest comments provide a more optimistic outlook. The December timetable would allow Tkachuk ample time to prepare for the Milan-Cortina Olympics in February, where he is expected to represent the United States.
Despite playing injured, Tkachuk remained highly productive last season with 57 points in 52 regular-season games and 23 points in 23 playoff games. He tied teammates Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe for the team lead in postseason scoring while helping the Panthers capture their second straight championship.
Brad Marchand is expected to fill Tkachuk’s role in the top-six forward group to start the season. The veteran winger, who was acquired from Boston in March, recorded 20 points in 23 playoff games and signed a six-year extension to remain with Florida.
The Panthers also announced that forward Tomas Nosek will miss extended time with a knee injury sustained during offseason training. Nosek recorded nine points in 59 regular-season games and three assists in 16 playoff games last season.
Tkachuk’s absence, combined with Nosek’s injury, creates opportunities for players like Jesper Boqvist, Luke Kunin and Tyler Motte to secure roster spots during training camp. The Panthers begin their quest for a three-peat when they raise their championship banner October 7 against the Chicago Blackhawks.
