New Jersey Devils defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic will miss the start of the 2025-26 season after undergoing knee surgery in May.
The 27-year-old sustained the injury during the first shift of Game 3 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs against Carolina. Kovacevic finished the opening period before team doctors ruled him out during intermission. He underwent successful knee surgery on May 8 and has been ruled out indefinitely by the organization.
Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald confirmed last week that Kovacevic will miss training camp and is not expected to be ready for the season opener. The injury represents a significant blow to New Jersey’s defensive depth as they prepare for the upcoming campaign. Kovacevic had established himself as a key component of the Devils’ blue line after being acquired from Montreal in June 2024.
The defenseman appeared in 81 games during the 2024-25 regular season, recording one goal and 16 assists for 17 points. His strong play earned him a five-year contract extension worth $20 million in March, securing his place in the organization’s long-term plans. Kovacevic formed an effective shutdown pairing with Jonas Siegenthaler throughout the season.
The Devils face additional uncertainty on their blue line with restricted free agent Luke Hughes remaining unsigned as training camp continues. Hughes led all New Jersey defensemen with 44 points last season but has not reported to camp while contract negotiations continue. The Devils’ management has called re-signing Hughes their top priority.
New Jersey opens its preseason schedule Sunday against the New York Rangers at Prudential Center. The team will need to evaluate internal options to fill the void left by Kovacevic’s absence when the regular season begins in October.
