Sunday Showdown: NHL Late Game Picks

Sidney Crosby

I’m not a fan of betting on NHL weekend afternoon games, they are just too weird to gauge. The Oilers for example erased a four-goal deficit in the second period against the Blue Jackets only to fall apart in the 3rd period and lose 6-5. The Carolina Hurricanes also couldn’t take down the Anaheim Ducks at home, which seemed like an easy matchup. Before that win, the Ducks only have 9 road wins all year, whereas the Canes had just six losses at home.

I’m not sure if the season is starting to take its toll on players, but there definitely seems to be a lull period with some teams.

Tampa Bay/Pittsburgh Over 6.5

Lightning at Penguins

The Lightning have scored seven or more goals in seven of their past eleven games, so expect a high-scoring affair. Brian Elliot will be in net for the Bolts, who is having a decent season but holds a 2.9 GAA. The PEN’s matchups well against the Lightning. Both teams have will be facing mediocre defenses, who just played yesterday. Seven goals shouldn’t be too hard to come by in this game.

Chris Kreider Over 2.5 Shots

Kings at Rangers

The top line for the Rangers has struggled to generate points lately. Mika Zibanejad hasn’t scored a goal in four games despite his 6 game-goal streak earlier in the month. I think the team is still trying to figure out the best line combinations with newly acquired Tarasnko. I expect Kreider to see more time on the top line tonight. Kreider plays well at home, averaging 3.21 shots per game. He should hit the over in this contest.

Sidney Crosby Over 2.5 Shots

Lightning at Penguins

As I mentioned above, this game should see a lot of scoring opportunities. Both teams have had busy schedules and both played last night. Neither team has a strong defense group and should give up a lot of odd-man rushes. This game is very important for the Pens as they are battling for a playoff spot and sit just on the inside of the playoff standings.

Crosby has had over 2.5 shots in four of his last five games.
